Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Sitka Assembly voted unanimously to pass an emergency ordinance establishing a mask mandate in the municipality during a regular meeting Thursday evening.
There was about an hour of public testimony from both those for and against mandatory masking. Assemblymembers also spent more than an hour in discussion before passing the emergency ordinance 6 to 0.
The ordinance establishes masking requirements, with exceptions, for all individuals in indoor public spaces. This ordinance will end when the City and Borough of Sitka reaches a “moderate” COVID-19 risk level or midnight on August 24 of this year. If the risk level is still high on Aug. 24, the mandate may be renewed.
Sitka has 191 active cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday evening.
