Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the United States Forest Service has announced an early closure to the moose hunting season in the portion of Game Management Unit 5(A) east of the Dangerous River, but not including Nunatak Bench.
The hunt in this area is managed under joint state and federal registration permit RM061.
Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game set the 2020 harvest objective at 30 bull moose for the portion of the Yakutat Forelands east of the Dangerous River.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 27, 2020, 29 bulls have been harvested. Due to there being just one more moose available in the quota, and hunters still expected to be hunting until this Emergency Order goes into effect, the state expects the quota will be filled before this Emergency Order goes into effect.
This Emergency Order closes the state moose hunting season in this area on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. The United States Forest Service has also issued a news release closing the Federal moose hunting season in this area.
Hunters with questions about moose hunting in Game Management Unit 5A are encouraged to contact Roy Churchwell at the Douglas Area Office of ADF&G at 907-465-4266.
