Masks grow in importance during the pandemic

    President Donald Trump.

Washington, DC (ABC) - One of the top members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Admiral Brett Giroir said masks are vital to controlling the pandemic.

President Donald Trump wore a face mask in public for the first time Saturday.

The CDC first recommended the use of masks to the public 99 days ago.

President Trump said he has never been against wearing masks, "I do believe they have a time and a place."

Admiral Giroir said there needs to be near-universal use and participation in masks to get the virus under control, "We have to have near 90 percent of people wearing a mask in public in hot spot areas.  If we don't have that, we will not get the virus under control."
